Catching Up: Part 1 01/17/2012
In late November, we began our implementation of 1:1 in our 5th grade classes. We worked closely with the classroom teachers and building administration to make sure that we were prepared for the changes that were about to come. We learned a lot from this initial 1:1 transition that will help us in upcoming 1:1 initiatives (we plan on going 1:1 in 3rd and 4th grade as well).
Our first round of iPads came and we immediately started learning so much about the management of the iPads, itunes, and apps. We eventually found a system that worked for us. The biggest thing that we try to do is make sure that the apps that are on itunes are the same ones that we want on the ipad. We are actually going to have a macbook for each cart, so the ipads in the cart will mirror that macbook's itunes account. We will also be creating master backups in each cart to help if we have to reset anything.
The changes in student engagement were immediate. Our 5th graders were more interested in writing in their notepad app then they ever had been before. Of course many will test the waters, but we were very clear and intentional with our expectations and students gradually started to learn appropriate and inappropriate iPad use.
So far, so good!
